Scotia Cemetery Index

SW 10-13-24 W1M
Rural Municipality of Hamiota, Manitoba

This is a well kept cemetery at the south end of the Hamiota Municipality, situated on the SW 1/4 of 10-13-24 W1M.  It is one mile south of the Oakner and Highway #21 corner, and four miles west.  There is a chain link fence on the west side, with brick gate posts and an iron gate with the dates 1882-1966 on them.  It is a very peaceful resting place with a caragana hedge on the other three sides and a row of trees down the middle to a utility shed at the east end.

Mrs. A.M. MacKay, in the "History of Scotia", 1937, so aptly described the cemetery:

". . . "God's Acre" [Scotia cemetery], which is most dear and sacred to us to-day.  It is situated two miles south of the Church, on the south-west corner of Mr. Jas. Smith's homestead; it is rather isolated from highways, but a very pretty spot.  to enter there on a calm summer evening, when the trees and hedges are green and lilacs and honeysuckle are in bloom, you are surely filled with the Glory of God.  You feel so very near many who pioneered and have been layed to rest in this plot; knowing they ran the straight race, fought the good fight, and now rest in Peace."

The land had been donated by Mr. and Mrs. James Smith.  Just inside the gate on the south side at the end of Row 1, is a bronze plaque (approximately 8" x12") on a metal post.  It reads: "This plaque is in memory of / Mr. and Mrs. James Smith / who donated land for / Scotia cemetery in 1882 / insuring free plots.  Acknowledgement by the Hamiota Municipal Council"

The cemetery was originally transcribed by A.P. McMannis and L.V. Westwood in July, 1980.  This transcription was updated in April, 1998 by James W. Routledge.  Mr. Routledge continues to supply updated information to your host.  This cemetery was transcribed as part of the Manitoba Genealogical Society's goal to have all the cemeteries in Manitoba recorded.

The numbers after the name refer to the Row and plot number in the transcription.  Please note that there are two sections to the cemetery North and South, look in both for your family members name.

Please e-mail me with your request for look up stating the name and whether north or south and row and plot number (eg. Annie Lorimer Anderson, north, A4) to elaine@markers.com.
